Christian Elephants on a Mission

In July 2008 a severe persecution of Christians broke out in the Indian state of Orissa. A 22 year old nun was burnt to death when angry mobs burnt down an orphanage in Khuntpali village in Barhgarh district, another nun was gang raped in Kandhamal, mobs attacked churches, torched vehicles, houses of Christians destroyed, and Fr. Thomas Chellen, director of the pastoral center that was destroyed with a bomb, had a narrow escape after a Hindu mob nearly set him on fire. The end result saw more than 500 Christians murdered, and thousands of others injured and homeless after their houses were reduced to ashes. Recently a strange and dramatic event took place in Orissa, which has many people talking and wondering.

In recent months, herds of wild elephants have begun to storm villages that are home to some of the worst persecutors of Christians during the troubles. In one village, where in August a year ago the Christians had to run for …

Word for the Day

When I Need More Love in My Life

Heavenly Father, I thank You that I am Your child and that You love me. Help me to never doubt Your love for me. Help me to trust Your love for me so much that I never even feel a lack of love in my life from anyone else, either in my past, present, or future. Lord, I release anyone in my life who did not love me the way I hoped they would, or did not love me the way I wanted them to. Your love is greater than human love, and it never fails.

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

Advent 1

My favourite Advent hymn since school days:

Hills of the North, Rejoice!
River and mountain spring,
Hark to the advent voice;
Valley and lowland, sing;
Though absent long, your Lord is nigh;
He judgment brings and victory.

Isles of the southern seas,
Deep in your coral caves
Pent be each warring breeze,
Lulled be your restless waves:
He comes to reign with boundless sway,
And makes your wastes His great highway.

Lands of the East, awake,
Soon shall your sons be free;
The sleep of ages break,
And rise to liberty.
On your far hills, long cold and grey,
Has dawned the everlasting day.

Shores of the utmost West,
Ye that have waited long,
Unvisited, unblest,
Break forth to swelling song;
High raise the note, that Jesus died,
Yet lives and reigns, the Crucified.

Shout, while ye journey home;
Songs be in every mouth;
Lo, from the North we come,
From East, and West, and South.
City of God, the bond are free,
We come to live and reign in thee!

Coma Man Conscious after 23 years

A man injured in a car crash lay paralysed in a hospital bed for 23 years diagnosed as being in a coma, but was conscious of his ordeal the whole time.
Rom Houben was paralysed as a result of his accident and had no way of alerting doctors that he was aware of his surroundings and able to hear every word they were saying.
Doctors in Zolder in Belgium carried out a number of tests on Houben, and decided that his consciousness was 'extinct' and he was in a persistent vegetative state.
On every occasion, he was diagnosed incorrectly and Mr Houben was left to suffer in silence for over two decades.
Now 46, Houben said 'I dreamed myself away,' adding that 'I screamed, but there was nothing to hear'.
'I became a witness to my own suffering as doctors and nurses tried to speak with me until they gave up all hope.'
The arrival of new high-tech scanners found that Houben's brain was functioning normally, and therapy has since allowed him to tap out messages …

Comments (128) Add to My Stories Although no one noticed at the time, the Earth was almost hit by an asteroid last Friday.
The previously undiscovered asteroid came within 8,700miles of Earth but astronomers noticed it only 15 hours before it made its closest approach.

Its orbit brought it 30 times nearer than the Moon, which is 250,000 miles away

Living in a secular world reports:

"The Vatican expressed "astonishment" and "regret" at Tuesday's decision from the European Court of Human Rights that crucifixes in public school classrooms are a violation of freedom.

Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Vatican press office, gave a brief statement today to Vatican Radio in response to the decision."

The crucifix has always been a sign of God's offer of love, of union and of
welcome for the whole of humanity," the spokesman said. "It is to be regretted
that it has come to be considered as a sign of division, of exclusion and of
limitation of liberty. It is not this, and it is not so in the common feeling of
our people.""

Vatican searches for ET

"As an astronomer I continue to believe that God is the creator of the universe," Funes told the Vatican mouthpiece, the Osservatore Romano.

The possibility raises a difficult theological question concerning redemption from the original sin, which by Christian tradition occurred in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit of a particular tree.

Funes told the Osservatore Romano: "If other intelligent beings exist, it's not certain that they need redemption."

With his daring scheme for Anglicans, Benedict XVI fulfils the hopes of Cardinal Newman

The Telegraph reports:
Was Pope Benedict XVI inspired by Cardinal John Henry Newman, whom it is hoped he will beatify in England next year, when he suddenly threw open the gates of Rome to disaffected Anglicans on Tuesday morning?
The official website for Newman’s Cause hinted as much when it greeted the announcement with a reminder of Newman’s support for a proposal to establish an Anglican Uniate Church for converts, similar to that provided for Byzantine-rite Catholics. The plan was conceived by Ambrose Phillips de Lisle and Newman rightly guessed that it would be unworkable. But if it could be made to work, he said, he was all in favour. As he wrote to de Lisle in 1876:
“Nothing will rejoice me more than to find that the Holy See considers it safe and promising to sanction some such plan as the Pamphlet suggests. I give my best prayers, such as they are, that some means of drawing to us so many good people, who are now shivering at our gates, may be discovered.”

Then he returned to his Catholic faith. Now, Dr. John Bruchalski's mission is to help spread the message of Divine Mercy through his medical practice. Currently I have been volunteering at a Centre Of Peace bookshop, originally coming out of the Medjugorje movement. As well as books we sell a wide range of Catholic items. Being at the shop has meant I have been finding out more about Medjugorje and other Marian apparitions around the world. As well as Marian apologetics.

The following article on Bl. Bartolomeo Longo and the Rosary was written by Br. Ezra Sullivan, OP. It originally appeared on the Catholic Exchange website on October 26, 2007, in the month dedicated to our Lady of the Rosary.

On the day of Bartolo Longo’s beatification, October 26, 1980, Pope John Paul II called him a “man of the Madonna”; he later called him “a true apostle of the rosary” and “a layman who lived his ecclesial pledge to the full”. And John Paul II knew what he was saying — his own Marian spirituality was influenced deeply by what, as a young man, he had gleaned from Bartolo’s life and works.
So who was this a man who so profoundly affected the great…

Sexualising our children

The schools and government are concerned about the craze for runner bands which can be exchanged in the school playground - for 'favours' by the girls. They are obviously concerned about sexualising of our children - what about the education system itself which has been sexualising our children at younger and younger ages. They should look on their own doorsteps first at some of the policies that they ahve out in place.

Culture Watch says: Governments Sexualising Our Children
We can understand the sex industry and porn lobby attempting to target our kids and push their sleazy agenda on them. But when the government gets into this business, using our tax dollars to do so, then we must be especially concerned.
Primary school kids are being targeted by a website developed by La Trobe University. The site,, uses cartoons to tell 10 to 12-year-olds about how they can get “interested in sex”. It also informs them what a relief it can be if a woman has an …

Is it necessary?

On the Laura Ingraham Show, Raymond Arroyo reported that the Met's new season opener, Puccini's Tosca, features a very disturbing scene.
At the end one of the acts, the baritone who plays Baron Scarpia apparently simulates the sexual act with a statue of the Virgin Mary. When the curtain rises again, he is found caressing the statue.
We would never see this type a scene perpetrated with a statue of Mohammad. But, as usual, we Christians are fair game.
I cannot see how this is necssary in the name of art and must be offensive to many. One show I will be avoiding if it comes to the UK.

Atheists are a dying breed

Austria is the only country which records the religious belief of parents but their figure, of 0.85 children per atheist woman, is far below replacement rate (2.1) and below even the most barren European country’s average rate, which is about 1.2. Single Mothers in UK

Parenting a child well is a worthwhile, necessary, demanding full time JOB OF WORK. To put a parent with no working partner under pressure to work (under threat of financial penalty) when a child is under 5 may cause long term psychological damage to the child. Research shows how personality problems are formed in children traumatised before the age of 5. These lead to future (costly) social problems. Vulnerable children need love and stability with their biological parent/s. Why destroy a child's developing sense of self, learned through family love, security and discipline by paying a childminder when you can pay the parent to do the job she/he is biologically programmed to do. Children left with trauma find it easy to turn away from family to gangs for security and recognition. Children of all ages are vulnerable to abuse as they grow up looking for love they can't find at home. These are some of the problems exacerbated because our culture does not appear to value good par…

Fr. Cull Talks About the Importance of His Family

When a loved one passes on.

If someone close to your family has recently died, help your child to see that person as a saint who can intercede for them. Try something like this for an explanation:
“Now that Uncle Joe is in heaven with God, he really knows God so much better than we do. When you have a problem, ask Uncle Joe to take it to God for you. Uncle Joe still loves you so much—even more now that he’s in heaven. He’ll want to do what he can to help you. And because Uncle Joe knows God so well now, he can help you know God better, too.”

Marino Restrepo - Reflections with Padre Pio (1 of 6)

The dangers of some pentecostal/evangelical churches.

The BBC report a man that let his daughter die because he put prayer over calling for medical assistance. Yes, prayer and faith are important but God has also given us medical wisdom and the two should go hand in hand.

A US jury has found a man guilty of killing his sick 11-year-old daughter by praying for her recovery rather than seeking medical care.
The man, Dale Neumann, told a court in the state of Wisconsin he believed God could heal his daughter.
She died of a treatable disease - undiagnosed diabetes - at home in rural Wisconsin in March last year, as people surrounded her and prayed.

The Catholic Church has always balanced faith and reason, whereas some of these churches seem to concentrate on faith only and this is where they get out of kilter and unbalanced.

The stress and financial uncertainty of separation can continue to take their toll on our bodies decades after the Decree Absolute comes through, the research indicates.

Half-brain girl sees all in one eye

It shows how amazing the human body is and how much we need to protect the right to life of babies. The news reports: Scientists claim they have discovered how a girl born with half a brain has both fields of vision in one eye. The 10-year-old, who is from Germany, is able to see with the power of both the left and right eye in a single eye despite the failure of the right hemisphere of her brain to develop in the womb.
Scientists at Glasgow University now believe that the girl's brain rewired itself during its development in the only known case of its kind in the world.
In other cases where patients have half of the brain removed - for example to treat severe epilepsy - one field of vision is lost in both eyes.
This would leave them only able to see objects on the left or right side of their vision. In the case of the German girl, her left and right field vision is almost perfect in one eye.
Scans on the girl showed that retinal nerve fibres which should have gone to the right hemis…

Catholic charities breaking law on homosexual adoption

The Daily Telegraph reports: Catholic charities who discriminate against homosexual couples who want to adopt children are breaking the law, the Charity Tribunal has ruled.

The Tribunal's ruling leaves leading charity Catholic Care (Diocese of Leeds) facing a deep religious impasse and creates a fundamental conflict between the tenets of the Catholic Church and the law of the land.

Catholic Care has a respected reputation, particularly in finding new families for "hard to place" children, but has never provided adoption services to homosexuals for religious reasons.

And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning. I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.
