BOYCOTT CHANNEL 4

A television advert giving advice on unplanned pregnancy and explaining how to get an abortion will be aired for the first time next week.

Channel 4 will show the commercial, paid for by the Marie Stopes organisation, next Monday, well past the watershed at 10.10pm.

Anti-abortion campaign Pro Life does not approve.

"The purpose of an abortion commercial is clearly to 'sell' abortion and it will not provide full information about foetal development, the abortion procedure itself, the health risks which abortion poses for women, let alone the alternatives to abortion," the charity said.

"This is hardly conducive to making the 'informed sexual health choices' which Marie Stopes claims to provide."

Channel 4 have this to say:
Thank you for contacting Channel 4 Viewer Enquires regarding the Marie
Stopes advert.

We are sorry to hear that you object to the broadcast of this advert on our
channels.

Channel 4 has had no input into the content of this advertisement, which
makes no mention of abortion and is similar to advertising already carried
in other media. The advert has been approved for broadcast by Clearcast UK,
which gave us unambiguous guidance that it is compliant with BCAP's
Advertising Standards Code.

The BCAP Code contains robust rules about the nature and content of TV
advertising and we believe it offers sufficient protection for our viewers
against potential harm and offence. Therefore, subject to an advert being
cleared for broadcast under the code, we are prepared to transmit it in an
appropriate time slot; we believe it is up to viewers to form their own
judgments about the content and messages that advertising contains.

Nevertheless please be assured that your comments have been noted and logged
for the attention of the advertising department.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact us. We appreciate all
feedback from our viewers; complimentary or otherwise.
