Going to church at Christmas may have been good for the soul, but scientists have discovered that it may also be good for the body.

Researchers found that attending services lowers blood pressure – and the more often you go the lower it becomes.

Previous studies in the U.S. suggested the link, but as 40 per cent of Americans regularly go to church its health benefits were treated as a coincidence. So the Norwegian researchers, who had just four per cent of churchgoers among their 120,000 participants, were surprised to see they too had lower blood pressure.

Pope Benedict XVI called for an end to the bloodshed in Syria and the resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in his Christmas message today, an appeal for peace that was challenged by deadly attacks on two Nigerian churches.

He made the plea the morning after Christmas celebrations got underway with a midnight mass service at a packed St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.

The Pontiff used his Christmas ceremonies to condemn the 'superficial glitter' that now imbues the holiday.

He urged the faithful to discover its true meaning and remember the 'child in the stable' instead of being consumed by the commercial side of Christmas.

Confirmation names

The practice of adopting a new name was not limited to baptism. Many medieval examples show that any notable change of condition, especially in the spiritual order, was often accompanied by the reception of a new name. In the eighth century the two Englishmen, Winfrith and Willibald, going on different occasions to Rome received from the reigning pontiff, along with a new commission to preach, the names respectively of Boniface and Clement. So again Emma of Normandy, when she married King Ethelred in 1002, took the name Ælfgifu; while, of course, the reception of a new name upon entering a religious order is almost universal even in our day. It is not strange, then, that at confirmation, in which the interposition of a godfather emphasizes the resemblance with baptism, it should have become customary to take a new name, though usually no great use is made of it. In one case, however, that of Henry III, King of France — who being the godson of our English Edward VI had been christened Edouard Alexandre in 1551 — the same French prince at confirmation received the name of Henri, and by this he afterwards reigned. Even in England the practice of adopting a new name at confirmation was remembered after the Reformation, for Sir Edward Coke declares that a man might validly buy land by his confirmation name, and he recalls the case of a Sir Francis Gawdye, late Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, whose name of baptism was Thomas and his name of confirmation Francis (Co. Litt. 3a).

The Hard Sayings of Jesus

At Bible group we were looking at the hard sayings of Jesus – in particular this week it was looking at the scripture of ‘the sheep and the goats’.

Matthew 25: 31-46

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.³² All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. ³³ He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

³⁴ “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. ³⁵ For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,³⁶ I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

³⁷ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? ³⁸ When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? ³⁹ When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

⁴⁰ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

⁴¹ “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. ⁴² For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, ⁴³ I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

⁴⁴ “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

⁴⁵ “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

⁴⁶ “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

In regards to the hard sayings of Jesus we must not reject them or try to sweeten them just because they are hard. Sometimes the truth is unpalatable but it is still the truth.

For instance when Jesus says to the people in the synagogue that they will not enter the kingdom of heaven unless they drink his blood and eat his flesh, the disciples found this too hard and so walked away – it was unpalatable to them.

Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” John 6:53 NIV

He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?" John 6:59-60

This was his own disciples, those who up to this point had been following Jesus but now turned away because they found this to be too hard to follow.

Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? King James Bible

This is an hard saying - The word "hard" here means "offensive, disagreeable" - that which they could not bear. Some have understood it to mean "difficult to be understood," but this meaning does not suit the connection. The doctrine which he delivered was opposed to their prejudices; it seemed to be absurd, and they therefore rejected it.

The doctrines which Jesus taught that were so offensive appear to have been:

1. that he was superior to Moses.

2. that God would save all that he had chosen and those only.

3. that he said he was the bread that came from heaven.

4. that it was necessary to partake of that; that it was necessary that an atonement should be made, and that they should be saved by that.

These doctrines have always been among the most offensive that men have been called on to believe, and many, rather than trust in them, have chosen to draw back to perdition, that is the entire loss; utter destruction; ruin; esp., the utter loss of the soul, or of final happiness in a future state; future misery or eternal death.

The sheep and the goats seems to fall in to this category – that God would save the chosen ones. There is a lot of mention of separation of those who follow Jesus and those who don’t as in the example the wheat and the chaff, one brother taken up and another left in the field, one woman taken and another left, the seven foolish virgins and the seven wise.

Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Matthew 24:40

Matthew 24:41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.

Here Jesus is saying that people will either be separated into eternal punishment or eternal life.

A separation was to take place between the righteous and the wicked, which was not done at Jerusalem. The rewards and punishments are declared to be "eternal."

His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire." Matthew 3:12

Matthew 13:30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.'"

The Old Testament says:

Psalm 1:4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.

The sheep and the goats is also about a ‘heart condition’, just as Jesus always says to go the extra mile and stretches the commandments – give your brother your coat, not to look on a woman with lust in your heart, loving your Christian brothers and sisters, so he is saying here it is not good enough to be a disciple unless you are also expressing that outwardly in Christian action and social care.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary states:

25:31-46 This is a description of the last judgment. It is as an explanation of the former parables. There is a judgment to come, in which every man shall be sentenced to a state of everlasting happiness, or misery. Christ shall come, not only in the glory of his Father, but in his own glory, as Mediator. The wicked and godly here dwell together, in the same cities, churches, families, and are not always to be known the one from the other; such are the weaknesses of saints, such the hypocrisies of sinners; and death takes both: but in that day they will be parted for ever. Jesus Christ is the great Shepherd; he will shortly distinguish between those that are his, and those that are not. All other distinctions will be done away; but the great one between saints and sinners, holy and unholy, will remain for ever. The happiness the saints shall possess is very great. It is a kingdom; the most valuable possession on earth; yet this is but a faint resemblance of the blessed state of the saints in heaven. It is a kingdom prepared. The Father provided it for them in the greatness of his wisdom and power; the Son purchased it for them; and the blessed Spirit, in preparing them for the kingdom, is preparing it for them. It is prepared for them: it is in all points adapted to the new nature of a sanctified soul. It is prepared from the foundation of the world. This happiness was for the saints, and they for it, from all eternity. They shall come and inherit it. What we inherit is not got by ourselves. It is God that makes heirs of heaven. We are not to suppose that acts of bounty will entitle to eternal happiness. Good works done for God's sake, through Jesus Christ, are here noticed as marking the character of believers made holy by the Spirit of Christ, and as the effects of grace bestowed on those who do them. The wicked in this world were often called to come to Christ for life and rest, but they turned from his calls; and justly are those bid to depart from Christ, that would not come to him. Condemned sinners will in vain offer excuses. The punishment of the wicked will be an everlasting punishment; their state cannot be altered. Thus life and death, good and evil, the blessing and the curse, are set before us, that we may choose our way, and as our way so shall our end be.

Deuteronomy 11:26 says :”See I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse ...”

Deuteronomy 30:1 When all these blessings and curses I have set before you come upon you and you take them to heart wherever the LORD your God disperses you among the nations,

Deuteronomy 30:15 See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction.

Deuteronomy 30:19 This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live

This is why we have been offered the free gift of hope in Jesus and the opportunity to live under the Blessing of God and not the curse of the enemy.

Clarke's Commentary on the Bible states:

Behold, I set before you - a blessing and a curse - If God had not put it in the power of this people either to obey or disobey; if they had not had a free will, over which they had complete authority, to use it either in the way of willing or nilling; could God, with any propriety, have given such precepts as these, sanctioned with such promises and threatenings? If they were not free agents, they could not be punished for disobedience, nor could they, in any sense of the word, have been rewardable for obedience. A Stone is not rewardable because, in obedience to the laws of gravitation, it always tends to the center; nor is it punishable be cause, in being removed from that center, in its tending or falling towards it again it takes away the life of a man.

That God has given man a free, self-determining Will, which cannot be forced by any power but that which is omnipotent, and which God himself never will force, is declared in the most formal manner through the whole of the sacred writings. No argument can affect this, while the Bible is considered as a Divine revelation; no sophistry can explain away its evidence, as long as the accountableness of man for his conduct is admitted, and as long as the eternal bounds of moral good and evil remain, and the essential distinctions between vice and virtue exist. If ye will obey, (for God is ever ready to assist), ye shall live; if ye will disobey and refuse that help, ye shall die. So hath Jehovah spoken, and man cannot reverse it.

The sheep are the ones who follow their shepherd and the goats are the ones who turn away and have hardened their hearts towards God and Man.

We must always temper God’s judgment with His mercy, as we see in Jesus’ treatment of the woman caught in adultery, the woman at the well or the Tax Collector who He chose to dine with. Jesus always confounded the traditions of the day by offering mercy, conviction rather than condemnation.

Jesus wants all to come to the knowledge and truth of Himself.

Ecclesiastes 10:2 The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.

Clarke's Commentary on the Bible says:

He shall set the sheep, etc. - The right hand signifies, among the rabbins, approbation and eminence: the left hand, rejection, and disapprobation. Hence in Sohar Chadash it is said, "The right hand is given, the left also is given - to the Israelites and the Gentiles are given paradise and hell - this world, and the world to come." The right and left were emblematical of endless beatitude and endless misery among the Romans. Hence Virgil: -

Hic locus est, partes ubi se via findit in ambas,

Dextera, quae Ditis magni sub moenia tendit:

Hac iter Elysium nobis; at laeva malorum

Exercet poenas, et ad impia Tartara mittit

Aen. vi. 540

Here in two ample roads the way divides,

The right direct, our destined journey guides,

By Pluto's palace, to the Elysian plains;

The left to Tartarus, where bound in chains

Loud howl the damn'd in everlasting pains.

Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible says:

And he shall set the sheep on his right hand,.... That is, the elect of God, and true believers, such as have the grace of God truly implanted in them; the sheep the Father gave unto Christ, and made his care and charge, whom he, as the good shepherd, laid down his life for; and who know his voice in effectual calling, and follow him in the way of his ordinances and appointments; and are comparable to sheep for their meekness and innocence, their simplicity and usefulness, and their harmless and inoffensive lives, and conversations: these Christ will set on his right hand, as a token of his affection for them, and a mark of respect and honour shown them, and as a pledge of that exaltation and glory he will be about to raise them to,

But the goats on the left; that is, the foolish virgins, wicked, and slothful servants, graceless professors, who, because of the impurity of their hearts, the filthiness of their lives, and their offensiveness to Christ, are compared to goats: these he will place at his left hand, in token of his disaffection for them, as a brand of disgrace upon them, and as an intimation of that dishonour, and miserable condition they will quickly be in. These different situations plainly pre-signify how things will go with each, that one will be acquitted, and made happy, the other will be condemned, and become miserable. Agreeable to which the Jews say that there is a right hand and a left hand with the Lord: they that are on the right hand, are such as have done well, and are "for absolution"; and they that are on the left hand are criminals, and are "for condemnation". Some think the allusion is to the two Scribes in the sanhedrim, who stood before the judges, one on the right hand, and the other on the left, and wrote the sentences; the one of those that were acquitted, and the other of those that were condemned. We speak about Jesus sitting at the right hand of God.

HE Parables of the Ten Virgins' and of the Unfaithful Servant' close with a Discourse on the Last Things,' the final Judgment, and the fate of those Christ's Righ Hand and at His Left (St. Matt. xxv. 31-46). This final Judgment by our Lord forms a fundamental article in the Creed of the Church. It is the Christ Who comes, accompanied by the Angelic Host, and sits down on the throne of His Glory, when all nations are gathered before Him. Then the final separation is made, and joy or sorrow awarded

God has come as a God of Mercy in the New Testament. Now are the days of Mercy. But God will come as a judge, to judge the Nations. We should seek Jesus now while His Mercy may be found. That there is a judgment to come, in which every man shall be sentenced to a state of everlasting happiness, or misery, in the world of recompence or retribution, according to what he did in this world of trial and probation, which is to be judged of by the rule of the everlasting gospel.

The administration of the judgment of the great day is committed to the Son of man; for by him God will judge the world (Acts 17:31), and to him all judgment is committed, and therefore the judgment of that day, which is the centre of all. Here, as elsewhere, when the last judgment is spoken of, Christ is called the son of man, because he is to judge the sons of men (and, being himself of the same nature, he is the more unexceptionable); and because his wonderful condescension to take upon him our nature, and to become the son of man, will be recompensed by this exaltation in that day, and an honour put upon the human nature.

Christ will come to the judgment-seat in real glory: the Sun of righteousness shall then shine in his meridian lustre, and the Prince of the kings of the earth shall show the riches of his glorious kingdom, and the honours of his excellent majesty; and all the world shall see what the saints only do now believe-that he is the brightness of his Father's glory. He shall come not only in the glory of his Father, but in his own glory, as mediator: his first coming was under a black cloud of obscurity; his second will be in a bright cloud of glory. The assurance Christ gave his disciples of his future glory, might help to take off the offence of the cross, and his approaching disgrace and suffering.

When Christ comes in his glory to judge the world, he will bring all his holy angels with him. This glorious person will have a glorious retinue, his holy myriads, who will be not only his attendants, but ministers of his justice; they shall come with him both for state and service. They must come to call the court (1 Th. 4:16), to gather the elect (ch. 24:31), to bundle the tares (ch. 13:40), to be witnesses of the saints' glory (Lu. 12:8), and of sinners' misery, Rev. 14:10.

False Doctrines

How do we discern false doctrines.

I think we have to be careful of false preachers especially in the Protestant Charismatic movement – as we see from this video below, a lot of the ‘catch the fire’ type services resemble something of the kundalini spirit that we see in other religions and new age practices. We need to look at the fruit of the teachings to discern the roots.

But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Peter 2:1

I think we need to look at the fruit of some of these movements. Well known televangelists often run more of a business than a ministry. Todd Bentley was a key figure in the Lakeland Revival and used wrestling terms and actions in his ministry. Todd Bentley was known to forcefully kick, hit, smack or knock over participants. In one incident, a man was knocked over and lost a tooth. In another, an elderly woman was intentionally kicked in the face. Bentley held that the Holy Spirit led him to such actions. He went on to have an affair, divorce his wife and remarry. He continues with his ‘ministry’.

Benny Hinn was seen with another well known evangelist who was also divorced while going through a divorce of his own, presumably not of his fault but brought on by the pressures of his ministry. Both evangelists continue with their ‘ministry’. They obviously shared some affection and comfort for each other, which in itself is not a crime. The lady in question, Paula White, was married as a teenager and remarried after becoming a Christian. Her second husband had also been married before. This marriage broke down in 2007.

Benny Hinn is very much a preacher of the ‘this time next year you will be a millionaire’ school of theology. It is a kind of pyramid selling whereby the ones at the bottom of the pyramid give and the ones at the top of the business make the most money. Benny Hinn does however support the Catholic Church and always in his services he says “Thank God for the Catholics”. Hinn proudly stated, "My upbringing, of course, was Catholic in that I attended the Catholic school in Jaffa, Israel. And so my mentality basically is a Catholic mentality. When I was born again, I was Catholic in my ways. I was very Catholic in my ideas, in my behavior." (Christianity Today, Sept. 3, 1991.)

On the September 14, 2011 broadcast of the 700 club, Pat Robertson suggested a husband to divorce his wife because she has Alzheimer's disease, noting that "Alzheimer's is a form of death." This contradicted previous views on the sanctity of human life in all forms (including, e.g., embryos).

In response, Russell D. Moore, Dean of the School of Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, wrote that Robertson's comments were "a repudiation of the gospel of Jesus Christ" and that "Pat Robertson's cruel marriage statement is no anomaly. He and his cohorts have given us for years a prosperity gospel with more in common with an Asherah pole than a cross. (Wiki)

An Asherah pole is a sacred tree or pole that stood near Canaanite religious locations to honor the Ugaritic mother-goddess Asherah, consort of El. The asherim were also cult objects related to the worship of the fertility Goddess Asherah, the consort of either Ba'al or, as inscriptions from Kuntillet ‘Ajrud and Khirbet el-Qom attest, Yahweh, and thus objects of contention among competing cults. The insertion of "pole" begs the question by setting up unwarranted expectations for such a wooden object: "we are never told exactly what it was", observes John Day. The role of the Asherah reflected in the texts was likely rewritten and reinterpreted by the followers of Ezra, upon the return of the Jews from captivity and the writing of the Priestly text. Though there was certainly a movement against goddess-worship at the Jerusalem Temple in the time of king Josiah, it did not long survive his reign, as the following four kings "did what was evil in the eyes of Yahweh" (2 Kings 23:32, 37; 24:9, 19). Further exhortations came from Jeremiah. The traditional interpretation of the Biblical text is that the Israelites imported pagan elements such as the Asherah poles from the surrounding Canaanites; the modern scholarly interpretations suggests instead that the Israelite folk religion was always polytheistic, and it was the prophets and priests who denounced the Asherah poles who were the innovators.

Pat Robertson is well known for being outspoken though sometimes he stretches the truth a bit. Robertson claims on his web site that through training and his "Age-Defying energy shake", he is able to leg press 2,000 lb (907 kg) while others claim he is stretching the truth a bit to push a common energy formula as two-thousand pounds would be an exceptional accomplishment for a world-class athlete, to say nothing of Robertson, then in his seventies.

Joyce Meyer also runs a well know ministry but was recently hit with scandal due to a murder case. One of her employees murdered his wife and children. Of course we must not forget that the Catholic Church itself has not been immune to scandal in the last few years. Joyce also endorses the "Holy Laughter Movement" of Rodney Howard Browne, which also mimics the kundalini spirit. The Charismatic practices of Holy Laughter and Being Slain in the spirit are demonic. No such foolishness is taught in the Word of God. Rather, we read in 1st Corinthians 14:40... "Let all things be done decently and in order." There is nothing "decent" about falling on the floor during a church service and laughing uncontrollably like an idiot.

But I think if we stay close to the truth then we become more aware of when something doesn’t feel right or doesn’t sit right with us, because there is more of the Holy Spirit in us able to discern when something is not of ‘The Holy Spirit’. If we find it unsettling or does not produce fruits of peace, patience and love and humility, then it is something we should probably not be involved in.

Prophet Paul Cain inherited the gift of ‘seeing’. David Pythes writes, “Paul's mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother had all been born with the gift of “seeing.” His great-grandmother would sometimes see things in broad daylight and ask her friends or family if they could see them too. If they said they could not, she would occasionally lay her hand upon them and they would immediately see the identical vision.”…Cain inherited this gift passed on from generations believing it is from the Lord where “He could see when a person was going to be healed and live and also knew when someone was going to die” (David Pytches in Some Said it Thundered Some Said it Thundered p.24-25).

This is what is known as a gifting in the occult, passed on through generations. This is not what we know as a gift from the Holy Spirit with sharing a vision by touch, this is paranormal activity.

Interestingly in one of his books, Paul advises against praying against the devil or casting him out, yet as Christians and Priests we should have no fear of casting things out and putting a stop to Satan’s works. Or praying for protection or intercession. It is almost that the enemy wants to convince people to give up praying so that he can work unhindered.

Cain said in 1989 that God was raising a new standard and the understanding of Christianity that would radically change us and our generation God has him to have a role in establishing this New Order of Christianity (new world order?).

That God is offering them a “greater privilege than was ever offered to any people of any generation at any time from Adam clear down through the end of the millennium”; and that they are “gonna have more than just a little omnipotent surge -- you're gonna behold that glory and become that glory.” (Bob Jones and Paul Cain, “Selections from the Kansas City Prophets,” audio, from Hank Hanegraaff, Counterfeit Revival, 1997)

Cain is a promoter of the aberrant Latter Rain teaching that certain believers become immortals on earth before Jesus comes “There will be a manifestation of the sons of God. And it won't be this baloney that we've heard of in the past;. . .I'm talking about a true manifested son of God;. . .and God wants us to realize once again in closing that there's going to be a great company of overcomers prepared for this mighty ministry which I call the prize of all the ages. (From Paul Cain's tape Joel's Army)' This is what is called the manchild company (overcomers).

Whenever we are offered equal glory with God, we can see the same work that was going on in the garden of Eden, when the serpent said to Eve: “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. ⁵ “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

The devil fell to earth like lightning because he wanted equal glory with God. This has been the eternal tension and will be until the end of time, the devil seeking to glorify himself and to trick followers into believing it too that they can be ‘equals with God’.

“… and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.” Matthew 24:11

1 Timothy 4 v 1-10 “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. ² Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. ³ They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. ⁴ For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, ⁵ because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.

⁶ If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters,^[a] you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. ⁷ Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. ⁸ For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. ⁹This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. ¹⁰ That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.”

I think the most important thing is to stay close to our Catholic faith, its teachings and heritage based on 2,000 years of teachings and doctrine and practice.

Thoughts on the Divine Will/Luisa Piccarreta movement

Firstly I am going to New Dawn at Walsingham myself which I am sure will be a great event and I am looking forward to it. Also I do believe in God’s Will in my life ever since I first gave my life to God as Christian and then as a Catholic. We have such a jewel in the Catholic faith that sometimes our Faith and Traditions get overlooked and people go looking for the next best thing or the latest prophecy as if something new is what they are searching for not unlike many evangelical churches that seek the next move of the Holy Spirit and are very open to being led astray, as with Todd Bentley and the false Kundalini spirit in the churches. But we have all we need in the Catholic Church, we just need to look closer to home, know our faith and let Jesus come to us in the Blessed Sacrament as well as benefit from the prayers of Mary in the Rosary.

The Council of Ephesus (AD 431)...professed that Mary is the Mother of God, the Theotokos (Birth-giver of God; sometimes translated as "God-bearer"). Jesus Christ is the divine Son of God who became man in the womb of Mary. The one who was born of Mary is the same one--the same person--who has existed with the Father and the Holy Spirit from all eternity.

Understanding that Jesus is both fully human and fully divine is very important. The Church has consistently defended this teaching against attempts to present one or the other as somehow less. If the Crucifixion and Resurrection were events that involved God only, then we are not saved. If Jesus was not divine, he would have been just another good man whose death and Resurrection would not have saved us. It is necessary to believe that the mystery of the Incarnation means that Jesus was both fully God and fully man.

This year, I notice that the theme for New Dawn at Walsingham Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done

states:

“Jesus came to establish the Kingdom of God here on earth according to the will of the Father who created all things and desired that life here below should be ordered in such a way that all mankind would experience the power of His infinite love, in anticipation of the fullness of life yet to be revealed in the Incarnation.

At the prompting of the evil one Adam sinned by going counter to the will of God and chose to follow his own will. Consequently disorder entered in, leading to destruction of God’s plan, resulting in misery, pain, alienation, darkness and death and all the things pertaining to the kingdom of Satan.

Jesus came to restore what had been lost, taking upon himself the consequences of Man’s failure and to completely reverse the disorder, enduring untold suffering to bring mankind back to God. At every point in his earthly life he submitted his human will to the infinite will of the Father, culminating in the Garden of Gethsemane when he said “Not my will but yours be done.” Mk 14:36 and finally on the cross when he uttered his last words “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”

It is our hope that all of us who are present at this Conference will enter into a fuller participation in the life of the Church remembering that “Everything that Christ lived enables us to live it in him and that he live in us.” Catechism of the Catholic Church (521).

Following the example of Mary all of us should say “Be it done unto me according to your word.” Luke 1:36

HIS WILL IS OUR PEACE”

I think this theme has aspects I would like to discuss and also discuss the theme of the ‘Divine Will movement of Luisa Piccarreta’ as I find it too simplistic and secondly the ‘new movement’ may not be theologically ‘accurate’. I personally do not believe in the new ‘movement’ of the ‘Divine Will’ that has sprung up in recent years as we need to be able to align it with the Catechism of the Church which I am not sure that does.

In the first instance they would seem to be separating the Will of Jesus from the Will of God when they are both the same. Though Jesus had both Human and Divine Will, they were not separate and God’s Divine Will and Jesus’ Divine Will were one and the same. Jesus was fully man and fully God. I think the problem with some charismatic groups is that sometimes the theology can get a bit ‘skew-whiff’ or as I said simplistic. We should always bring our knowledge and experiences back to the test of the Catechism and the Magisterium of the Catholic Church – does it hold up in the light of the Truth – don’t assume we have some ‘new revelation’ that wasn’t there before otherwise we can be blown along by every wind of new philosophies doing the rounds.

God’s ‘Will’ is that we should know Jesus and come to Him through Jesus and through the Holy Eucharist and the Sacraments.

"It pleased God, in his goodness and wisdom, to reveal himself and to make known the mystery of his will. His will was that men should have access to the Father, through Christ, the Word made flesh, in the Holy Spirit, and thus become sharers in the divine nature.” The Profession of Faith, CCC, Section 1

God’s Will was and is Jesus. There is not a new ‘fiat’. Mary was the new ‘Eve’. This therefore was God’s plan for mankind.

Even after the Fall of Adam and Eve, God kept a covenant with his people, with Noah, Abraham and through the patriarchs and the prophets. David was a man ‘after His own heart’.

"I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will." - Acts 13:22 (cf. 1Sa 13:13-14)

We see here that David did God’s Will, there is not a new ‘Divine Will’ but God Himself loved David because He wanted to do the ‘Will of God’. All Christians and Catholics desire to do the ‘Will of God’; it’s not a new revelation.

        Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the

   kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is

   in heaven. (Mt 7:21)

We need to do the ‘Will of God’ but this is not a ‘new’ revelation – this is part of basic Bible teaching that every Catholic should know. We do this by taking the Sacraments and following the Commandments and Loving the Lord Jesus with all our heart and loving our neighbours as ourselves. The Latin word sacramentum means "a sign of the sacred." The seven sacraments are ceremonies that point to what is sacred, significant and important for Christians. They are special occasions for experiencing God's saving presence. That's what theologians mean when they say that sacraments are at the same time signs and instruments of God's grace. For Catholics, the Sacrament of Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. Whether we are baptized as infants or adults, Baptism is the Church's way of celebrating and enacting the embrace of God.

In regards to THY WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN – The Catechism states this:

2822 Our Father "desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth."⁹⁵ He "is forbearing toward you, not wishing that any should perish."⁹⁶ His commandment is "that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another."⁹⁷ This commandment summarizes all the others and expresses his entire will.

2823 "He has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ . . . to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will." We ask insistently for this loving plan to be fully realized on earth as it is already in heaven.

2824 In Christ, and through his human will, the will of the Father has been perfectly fulfilled once for all. Jesus said on entering into this world: "Lo, I have come to do your will, O God." Only Jesus can say: "I always do what is pleasing to him." In the prayer of his agony, he consents totally to this will: "not my will, but yours be done." For this reason Jesus "gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father." "And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."

Jesus Christ died once and for all so that our sins may be forgiven and we may enter into eternity with Christ.

We unite ourselves to Jesus to accomplish His will on the earth for the salvation of mankind; through the grace of God and not in our own strength. If we stay close to Jesus and His Word in these times then we will not be led astray.

In committing ourselves to [Christ], we can become one spirit with him, and thereby accomplish his will, in such wise that it will be perfect on earth as it is in heaven. Committing ourselves to Jesus, to prayer, Daily Mass and the Sacraments help us to lead Holy lives. Saint Faustina tells of God’s great Mercy at this time which we need to bring to everyone. In her diary (Notebook I, items 47 and 48) she wrote that Jesus told her:

"Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature: "Jesus, I trust in You". I desire that this image be venerated, first in your chapel, and then throughout the world. I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish."

Consider how Jesus Christ teaches us to be humble, by making us see that our virtue does not depend on our work alone but on grace from on high. He commands each of the faithful who prays to do so universally, for the whole world. For he did not say "thy will be done in me or in us," but "on earth," the whole earth, so that error may be banished from it, truth take root in it, all vice be destroyed on it, virtue flourish on it, and earth no longer differ from heaven. This is the Truth of Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church.

2827 "If any one is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him." Such is the power of the Church's prayer in the name of her Lord, above all in the Eucharist. Her prayer is also a communion of intercession with the all-holy Mother of Godand all the saints who have been pleasing to the Lord because they willed his will alone:

It would not be inconsistent with the truth to understand the words, "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven," to mean: "in the Church as in our Lord Jesus Christ himself"; or "in the Bride who has been betrothed, just as in the Bridegroom who has accomplished the will of the Father."

And when such groups say that the ‘Saints did not have the divine will of God’ or weren’t doing the ‘divine will of God’ then that is how we know also it is a false prophecy. Because it says in the CCC ... all the saints who have been pleasing to the Lord because they willed his will alone.

956. The intercession of the saints. “Being more closely united to Christ, those who dwell in heaven fix the whole Church more firmly in holiness.... They do not cease to intercede with the Father for us, as they proffer the merits which they acquired on earth through the one mediator between God and men, Christ Jesus.... So by their fraternal concern is our weakness greatly helped.”

2683. "The witnesses who have preceded us into the kingdom, [Cf. Heb 12:1 .] especially those whom the Church recognizes as saints, share in the living tradition of prayer by the example of their lives, the transmission of their writings, and their prayer today. They contemplate God, praise him and constantly care for those whom they have left on earth. When they entered into the joy of their Master, they were 'put in charge of many things.' [Cf. Mt 25:21.] Their intercession is their most exalted service to God's plan. We can and should ask them to intercede for us and for the whole world."

"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what [is] the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to [the will of] God." - Romans 8:26-27

"And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four [and] twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints." - Revelations 5:8

"Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of [this] calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of [his] goodness, and the work of faith with power...." - 2 Thessalonians 1:11

"Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you." - 1 Corinthians 11:1-2

In regards to Jesus coming to restore what had been lost, He came to save us from our sins. It is a personal redemption for each and every one of us and it’s important not to gloss over this redemptive quality.

CCC states "He died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures"

601 The Scriptures had foretold this divine plan of salvation through the putting to death of "the righteous one, my Servant" as a mystery of universal redemption, that is, as the ransom that would free men from the slavery of sin. Citing a confession of faith that he himself had "received", St. Paul professes that "Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures." In particular Jesus' redemptive death fulfils Isaiah's prophecy of the suffering Servant. Indeed Jesus himself explained the meaning of his life and death in the light of God's suffering Servant. After his Resurrection he gave this interpretation of the Scriptures to the disciples at Emmaus, and then to the apostles.

"For our sake God made him to be sin"

602 Consequently, St. Peter can formulate the apostolic faith in the divine plan of salvation in this way: "You were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your fathers. . . with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was destined before the foundation of the world but was made manifest at the end of the times for your sake." Man's sins, following on original sin, are punishable by death. By sending his own Son in the form of a slave, in the form of a fallen humanity, on account of sin, God "made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

603 Jesus did not experience reprobation as if he himself had sinned. But in the redeeming love that always united him to the Father, he assumed us in the state of our waywardness of sin, to the point that he could say in our name from the cross: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Having thus established him in solidarity with us sinners, God "did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all", so that we might be "reconciled to God by the death of his Son".

God takes the initiative of universal redeeming love

604 By giving up his own Son for our sins, God manifests that his plan for us is one of benevolent love, prior to any merit on our part: "In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins." God "shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us."

605 At the end of the parable of the lost sheep Jesus recalled that God's love excludes no one: "So it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish." He affirms that he came "to give his life as a ransom for many"; this last term is not restrictive, but contrasts the whole of humanity with the unique person of the redeemer who hands himself over to save us. The Church, following the apostles, teaches that Christ died for all men without exception: "There is not, never has been, and never will be a single human being for whom Christ did not suffer.

III. CHRIST OFFERED HIMSELF TO HIS FATHER FOR OUR SINS

Christ's whole life is an offering to the Father

606 The Son of God, who came down "from heaven, not to do [his] own will, but the will of him who sent [him]", said on coming into the world, "Lo, I have come to do your will, O God." "And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." From the first moment of his Incarnation the Son embraces the Father's plan of divine salvation in his redemptive mission: "My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work."⁴¹⁵ The sacrifice of Jesus "for the sins of the whole world" expresses his loving communion with the Father. "The Father loves me, because I lay down my life", said the Lord, "[for] I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father."

607 The desire to embrace his Father's plan of redeeming love inspired Jesus' whole life, for his redemptive passion was the very reason for his Incarnation. And so he asked, "And what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, for this purpose I have come to this hour."And again, "Shall I not drink the cup which the Father has given me?" From the cross, just before "It is finished", he said, "I thirst."

"The Lamb who takes away the sin of the world"

608 After agreeing to baptize him along with the sinners, John the Baptist looked at Jesus and pointed him out as the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world". By doing so, he reveals that Jesus is at the same time the suffering Servant who silently allows himself to be led to the slaughter and who bears the Christ's whole life expresses his mission: "to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

David did the Will of God and Jesus offered up His life to God and God offered up His Son for us. The disciples, Apostles, Church Fathers and Saints all did the ’Will of God’ and completed Jesus’ mission on earth by bringing the faith to people and establishing the Catholic Church on earth (on earth as it is in heaven). That is the ‘Kingdom of God’ on earth. All Catholics should follow the Will of God and the path to Holiness but it is not a ‘new Revelation’ or the Catholic Church would never have been established.

In regards to Revelation of God and Jesus:

The CCC states: III. CHRIST JESUS -- "MEDIATOR AND FULLNESS OF ALL REVELATION"²⁵

God has said everything in his Word

65 "In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son."²⁶ Christ, the Son of God made man, is the Father's one, perfect and unsurpassable Word. In him he has said everything; there will be no other word than this one. St. John of the Cross, (St. John of the Cross, The Ascent of Mount Carmel 2,22,3-5 in The Collected Works of St. John of the Cross) among others, commented strikingly on Hebrews 1:1-2:

In giving us his Son, his only Word (for he possesses no other), he spoke everything to us at once in this sole Word - and he has no more to say. . . because what he spoke before to the prophets in parts, he has now spoken all at once by giving us the All Who is His Son. Any person questioning God or desiring some vision or revelation would be guilty not only of foolish behaviour but also of offending him, by not fixing his eyes entirely upon Christ and by living with the desire for some other novelty.

There will be no further Revelation

66 "The Christian economy, therefore, since it is the new and definitive Covenant, will never pass away; and no new public revelation is to be expected before the glorious manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ."²⁸ Yet even if Revelation is already complete, it has not been made completely explicit; it remains for Christian faith gradually to grasp its full significance over the course of the centuries.

67 Throughout the ages, there have been so-called "private" revelations, some of which have been recognized by the authority of the Church. They do not belong, however, to the deposit of faith. It is not their role to improve or complete Christ's definitive Revelation, but to help live more fully by it in a certain period of history. Guided by the Magisterium of the Church, the sensus fidelium knows how to discern and welcome in these revelations whatever constitutes an authentic call of Christ or his saints to the Church.

Christian faith cannot accept "revelations" that claim to surpass or correct the Revelation of which Christ is the fulfilment, as is the case in certain non-Christian religions and also in certain recent sects which base themselves on such "revelations".

CCC 68 By love, God has revealed himself and given himself to man. He has thus provided the definitive, superabundant answer to the questions that man asks himself about the meaning and purpose of his life.

CCC 69 God has revealed himself to man by gradually communicating his own mystery in deeds and in words.

CCC 70 Beyond the witness to himself that God gives in created things, he manifested himself to our first parents, spoke to them and, after the fall, promised them salvation (cf. Gen 3:15) and offered them his covenant.

CCC 71 God made an everlasting covenant with Noah and with all living beings (cf. Gen 9:16). It will remain in force as long as the world lasts.

CCC 72 God chose Abraham and made a covenant with him and his descendants. By the covenant God formed his people and revealed his law to them through Moses. Through the prophets, he prepared them to accept the salvation destined for all humanity.

CCC 73 God has revealed himself fully by sending his own Son, in whom he has established his covenant forever. The Son is his Father's definitive Word; so there will be no further Revelation after him.

I think what I would like to see written is not ‘His Will is our Peace’ but ‘Jesus Christ is our Peace’ because that is His (God’s) Will - Jesus.

The full statement of CCC 521 states that Christ enables us to live in him all that he himself lived, and he lives it in us. "By his Incarnation, he, the Son of God, has in a certain way united himself with each man." We are called only to become one with him, for he enables us as the members of his Body to share in what he lived for us in his flesh as our model:

We must continue to accomplish in ourselves the stages of Jesus' life and his mysteries and often to beg him to perfect and realize them in us and in his whole Church. . . For it is the plan of the Son of God to make us and the whole Church partake in his mysteries and to extend them to and continue them in us and in his whole Church. This is his plan for fulfilling his mysteries in us.

We should all as Catholics be following the ‘Will of God’ as Mary said “Be it done unto me according to your word.” Luke 1:36

We can find out God’s Will by reading our Bibles, attending Mass and studying the Catechism of the Church and documents in accordance with the Holy See and to “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation.”

If we are to fulfil Christ’s command to preach the gospel to the people of our own time, we must first attain a comprehensive and authentic knowledge of the Catholic Faith. For this reason, the Second Vatican Council encouraged lay people to "devotedly strive to acquire a more profound grasp of revealed truth." Furthermore, this striving for deeper knowledge benefits our own salvation as well as that of others. Jesus tells us, "Eternal life is this: to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."

We don't need to 'find' something that we haven't lost - don't let other people destroy your peace.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

And the peace of God - The peace which God gives. The peace here particularly referred to is that which is felt when we have no anxious care about the supply of our needs, and when we go confidently and commit everything into the hands of God. "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee;" Isiah 26:3

Which passeth all understanding - That is, which surpasses all that people had conceived or imagined. The expression is one that denotes that the peace imparted is of the highest possible kind.

The Christian, committing his way to God, and feeling that he will order all things aright, has a peace which is nowhere else known. Nothing else will furnish it but faith. No confidence that a man can have in his own powers; no reliance on his own plans or on the promises or fidelity of his fellow-men, and no calculations which he can make on the course of events, can impart such peace to the soul as simple confidence in God.

Shall keep your hearts and minds - That is, shall keep them from anxiety and agitation. The idea is, that by thus making our requests known to God, and going to him in view of all our trials and wants, the mind would be preserved from distressing anxiety.

Through Christ Jesus - By his agency, or intervention. It is only in him that the mind can be preserved in peace. It is not by mere confidence in God, or by mere prayer, but it is by confidence in God as he is revealed through the Redeemer, and by faith in him. Paul never lost sight of the truth that all the security and happiness of a believer were to be traced to the Saviour.

Further evidence to support staying close to Catholic doctrine comes from Father Gobbi.

It is claimed that On October 24, 1975, Fr. Stefano Gobbi alleged that Our Lady told him, "Thus it will again be the Spirit who will speak in you, and by means of the Spirit, making use of you, the whole world will be completely renewed."

Interestingly Father Gobbi's claims that through him '... the whole world will be renewed' are very similar to the claims of the Luisa Piccarretta movement which has some theological contradictions with the Catholic Faith. But I see a pattern here that the devil has nothing new up his sleeve. He just wants Catholics to take their eyes off the ball and to worship him. Just as he said to Jesus in the desert: I will give you all their authority and splendour, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. Luke 4:6

Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only. Luke 4:8

Also they can't BOTH be the means by which God will save the world! In fact Jesus is the only one who can save the World, now and in the future and in the Kingdom to come, as we say in the Our Father - Thy Kingdom Come - whose Kingdom - God's Kingdom.

Pope Benedict: proclaiming Jesus Christ is the task of the Church

Proclaiming Jesus Christ as “the way, the truth and the life” is the main task of the Church, Pope Benedict said in his Sunday Regina Coeli remarks.

“The New Testament put an end to invisibility of the Father. God showed his face, as confirmed by the response of Jesus to the Apostle Philip, ‘Whoever has seen me has seen the Father’,” the Pope told the faithful in St. Peter’s Square on May 22.

For Christians, he explained, “the way to the Father is to be guided by Jesus, by his word of truth, and in accepting the gift of his life.”

Pope Benedict suggested the way of Jesus Christ is to be found in “following him every day, in simple actions that make up our day.”
